When you think of family photography, I wonder what pops into your head?
Maybe family portraiture; you wrangle the family to dress up in matchy-matchy clothes, and you plead with the kids to behave impeccably so that you can get some nice photos for your Christmas cards.
Or perhaps you think of a ‘lifestyle’ approach, that gives a more natural, unposed look, focusing on love and connection.
Or possibly even ‘fantasy’ photography that uses beautiful props and clothing to create a magical and beautiful story but is staged and not real life.
Often family photography is important to Mom, and Dad tolerates the experience because he wants his wife to be happy. I also know plenty of Dads who flat-out refuse because all the floof of a photo session sounds like his worst nightmare. Make it focused around an adventure and it’s win-win for everyone!
We want to record with our camera the awe and wonder of you being in beautiful environments and simply the comradery of being together. We encourage exploring and discovering together. Learning new skills and supporting one another in the process.
The adventure could be mini or mighty. You get to choose (but we definitely offer our help and support with this!). It could be in your comfort zone or ever so slightly out of it. It could be familiar or something you haven’t attempted as a family before. In warmer weather it could be hiking, canoeing, fishing, tubing the river, a family campfire or camping trip, hanging at the lake or a bike ride. For a winter adventure, it could be snowshoeing, cross country skiing, tobogganing or marshmallows over the fire.
A photo adventure encapsulates what it means to be part of a family, to have friendship, and be loved all while enjoying a fun adventure in the great outdoors.
By partnering with professional photographers and adventure guides, it is a chance to tell the story of your family. To push the pause button on life and create a time capsule that you will treasure always. No blurry or underexposed iPhone shots. You get to be fully present in the moments, focusing on the people that matter most.
So how does all of this flow you might ask?
We will shoot your photo adventure 3 different ways and can change the emphasis depending on what is important to your family.
1. Candid ‘fly-on-the-wall’ type shots
Adventuring together is a great opportunity to capture candid photos. Think moments of connection with each other or wide environmental shots that show you and your family in beautiful landscapes.
2. Planned shots
We MAKE great photos. That means there is a good amount of planning and consideration that goes into an image. This happens mostly in the photographers head but also involves some moving of the subject, a change in the cameras point of view or redoing the shot a few times to get it just right! Occasionally we get lucky and capture something amazing in a really spontaneous way and sometimes we craft it so it looks really fun and spot-on in a photo.
3. And lastly, we will shoot a few images portrait style.
It is always nice to have everyone grouped together and some of the kids on their own also. We tend to sprinkle these throughout the adventure as it works.
The end result should be a gallery that shows lots of fun and real moments, with just a sprinkle of sugar on the top. The variety will give lots of different options for showcasing your photos. Our aim is to take the hard work out of photo sorting and printing. We do all of that for you. You just need to choose your favourites and whether you would like an album or a piece to put on your wall, or both! We do the rest.
Vacation Photography might be a new and novel concept; you are used to being your own photographer on your holidays and adventures. We believe by investing a little extra in your memories, they will be that much more vivid and special, and something that your whole family will treasure.
